Back in 1923, the Moortgat BreweryĀ had perfected its signature strong pale ale. Originally, it was called āVictory Aleā to celebrate the end of World War I. However, after tasting it, a local shoemaker reportedly exclaimed, "This is a real devil of a beer!"Ā ("Nen echten Duvel!"). The name stuck, and Duvel was born.
